Set in the rolling hills of southern Spain between Marbella and Sotogrande, flanked by the Casares Mountains, its magnificent golf course overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and is hailed as one of Spain’s finest.
After four and a half decades, 2009 saw the Volvo World Match Play Championship move to its new home at Finca Cortesin, arguably one of the finest golf courses in the world.
This week 19 May sees 24 of the world’s top players flocking to Finca Cortesin’s spectacular par 72 18 hole golf course, designed by one of the world’s leading
golf course architects, Cabell Robinson.
The course has been designed to incorporate the area’s original flora and fauna and is reputed to have the best greens in Southern Spain, known as Finca Cortesin’s jewels.
At 7,380 yards, this is one of the longest golf courses in Europe, with over 100 beautifully crafted white marble sand bunkers dotted amongst well-manicured
fairways.
With five par-3s and five par-5s, the tournament kicked off today (Thursday 19 May) with players drawn into eight groups of three where they will battle it out for a spot in the knock-out stages, consisting of the last 16.
Semi-finals will be on Saturday 21 May with the final on Sunday 22 May to determine the winner of the €800,000 prize.
Finca Cortesin is an ideal getaway for golfers of all abilities. Cleverly positioned so that you never hit into the sun at anytime of the day, sharpen your swing and aim for one of the four target greens all situated at different distances, so you can practise for when you play the course itself.
Finca Cortesin’s facilities and services also include a golf club valet and cleaning service, a buggy bar for ice cold drinks on demand when on the course and a large interior designed Clubhouse with golf shop, bar, restaurant, terrace and impressive and unspoilt views of the course and the ocean.
